They are pesky critters that can cause significant damage to your garden. While in some areas, iguanas that ended up in your yard is simply domesticated animals that escaped from the owners, some states such as the southern region of Florida will experience iguana invasion like no other. In this article, we will discuss some of the most effective ways in keeping this nuisance animals away from your premises.

How to Keep the Iguanas Away

When you encountered an iguana in your yard, we do not recommend you holding them with your barehand. While some of them may be domesticated, there are some of them that have already gone feral to adapt to their living environment.

Clear the Food Source

To avoid attracting the attention of the iguanas, you need to make sure that you will not leave the food unattended. If there are leftovers from a recently concluded party, you should not leave them out in the open. You need to immediately clean this mess. They are herbivores and will try anything once they smell something good. You should also clear the fallen fruits in your yard. Make it a habit to pick the fruits to avoid capturing the interest of wild creatures such as iguanas.

Keep Your Garbage Bin Secured

Iguanas can also be scavengers. They will be digging for leftovers in your trashcan. Be sure that it will be covered with a secured lid. There are also some iguanas that will be clever enough to remove the lid. Just to be sure, you should place a heavy object on top of it such as cinder block.

You may also keep it indoor to avoid attracting the attention of the wild animals. Make sure that the waste residue outside the garbage bin will be cleaned.

Seal the Holes

Iguanas are known to be good diggers. It is not uncommon to encounter numerous holes in your yard if you have an unwanted visitor in your yard. You should cover the holes with stones before finally sealing it with dirt. You need to do this during the day when the iguanas are out and hunting for foods. The iguanas will be able to remove the dirt, but it will not be able to remove the stones. They will most probably look for a better place to establish their den.

Barriers can also help you protect your vegetations from the attack of the iguanas. Introduce wire netting on your plants to prevent the creatures from entering the shrubs and plants. When the plant grows, the netting will be less-evident but they are still effective in deterring the attack of the iguanas. For the trees, wrap them with sheet metal to prevent the animal from climbing. Since the metal has a smooth surface, it will be difficult for the creature to gain traction.
